OVERCOMING COMPLEXES – Pt 1
Dear Reader,
Welcome to this glorious month! I pray this season will be much more remembered in your life and that of your family in Jesus’ name! This month, we shall be examining the topic Overcoming Complexes.
According to the American Psychological Association, a complex is defined as a group or impulses that have a common emotional tone and exert a strong but usually unconscious influence on the individual’s attitudes and behaviour. Studies have shown that there are several complexes commonly seen, but for the sake of the target audience, we will maintain two types of complexes. They are superiority and inferiority complex, and either of these is usually common with teenagers. In fact, a person develops either a superiority or inferiority complex from their teenage years. This is because this is a defining moment of their lives. This is where characters and habits are formed. The Word says: As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle (Job 29:4).
Superiority complex means having a mentality that you are more important and special than others; as such, everyone should obey your bidding. While it is not wrong to feel special, you must not let it result in pride or take it above others. The Bible says: Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves (Philippians 2:3). You ought to be meek and humble at all times. Apart from the fact that it is a true virtue for Christians, there are blessings attached to it. You get to learn a lot when you possess these characters.
On the other hand, an inferiority complex is the more common of the two, and it represents those with low self-esteem. This means that these persons feel low about themselves and have the notion that every other person is better, smarter and healthier than they are.
This can be a result of not appreciating one’s self, background or body parts. For instance, some people who are dark in complexion would wish to be fair because they think they would be more appreciated that way. Similarly, those from average or low-income families would feel inferior when they meet their mates from wealthy homes.
To have complex issues, whether inferior or superior, is proof of a lack of character. One thing people might not understand when it comes to those with a superiority complex is that, deep within them, they feel threatened and afraid of rejection. So, they use material and physical substances to cover up their fears.
Also, those with an inferiority complex have the wrong notion that acceptance and how others respond to them is tied to what they have. To get past both stages, you need to recognise and accept that whatever anyone has is given by God (James 1:17). You are created to be a blessing, and you are unique in your makeup (Psalm 139:14). God has great plans for you (Jeremiah 29:11), and they would only manifest if you can see them and work towards them (Genesis 13:14-15).
Remember that having complexes can cloud your mind from the good around you and the beauty of having relationships that would be a blessing to you. So, you must do all it takes to build proper self-esteem and live a life worthy of emulation.
However, to be free from all form of complexes, you need a sound relationship with Jesus. If you are not born again, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born Again.
Congratulations! You are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave or forsake you. With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace, in Jesus’ name!
