TURNING POINT (2)

I welcome you to another refreshing time in the presence of God and in His Word, even as you prepare for the place of your enlargement. I have been teaching on the things that must turn, for you to arrive at your desired destination this year.

So far, we have seen that if you have a vision of God’s purpose for your life, marriage and other benefits of life become cheap possibilities, because you are able to discern God’s will.

Today, we shall be looking at Maintaining Focus in your ploy to arrive at the colourful marital destiny that God has for you. It is focus that determines your future. If satan can break your focus, he can break your life. The truth is, it is what you focus on that consumes your time, energy and attention.

The Bible has this interesting story: So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face. And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver. And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it (1 Kings 20:38-40).

Wisdom demands, therefore, that you decide what to focus on per time. It is not everything that calls for your attention that you should focus on, or else you will be like that proverbial man who was busy here and there, and lost charge of the one committed into his hands.

What is focus?

Focus means to concentrate, look ahead, and keep your attention on something. I want to believe that as a youth, you have a dream, a goal or something of interest ahead of you that you need to concentrate on. Focus is a force that propels you to forge ahead or look into the future, in order to obtain outstanding results.

First Focus: God

God must be the first and foremost focus of your life. God is your Helper and without Him, you can do nothing. He is your Source and without Him, your purpose can never be fulfilled. Therefore, your primary goal in life should be God. The Bible says: In the beginning God… (Genesis 1:1). Until you begin with God, things are not bound to go well with you. Give God your undivided attention. Make Him your confidant and counsellor, and develop a relationship with Him through prayer and the study of His Word. If you focus on God, He will focus on you. If you concentrate on Him, He will concentrate on you. Note that nobody ever has God’s attention and not become a star on the earth.

Can you imagine Ruth, an unbeliever become the great grandmother of King David? How did she do it? When Naomi begged her to return to her people, she said in reply: Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God (Ruth 1:16). The husband she would marry was not her focus. God was her focus! You should know that when you seek God first, all other things will be added to you (Matthew 6:33).

Second Focus: Goals

Do you have an area of your life that you desire to see a turning point? Then set goals to help you arrive there. How do you get the best of goals? As soon as you have determined your goals, write them down. It is said that pen and paper never forget. Never leave your dreams to the chance of memory; write them down, because as you do, you help to reinforce them in your own mind. This way, you are reminded to stay committed to them. The danger in not writing your goals is that very soon, satan will puncture your enthusiasm; you may even begin to wonder whether the goals were worthwhile or not.

Develop a mental picture of your goals: It has been said that your picture determines your future. Therefore, you must paint a picture of your goals in your mind. If possible, physically place them where you can see them all the time.

Develop a plan to help you reach the goal: Planning helps you to set everything in proper perspective and appropriate order. It also enables you do each thing at the right time. God Himself is a planner. The Bible makes this clear in the story of creation. Everything that God did was sequential. For instance, He made the water before the fish, and planted the garden before putting man in it. Where there is no planning, there is bound to be chaos and every evil work.

Set deadlines: The purpose of deadlines or targets is that they put your goal into a time frame. Have you heard people say, “I’ll do it someday?” But someday is no day! Without a deadline, you are bound to procrastinate. You may have heard it said that procrastination is the thief of time. Why people dodge planning is that it seems to take so much more time. While this is true, the benefits far outweigh the inconveniences. At the end of the day, you will discover that it was indeed a blessing.

Water your goals with prayer: Goals are like plants. Without constant care, they will die. Prayer is water to your goals. Keep pouring it lavishly and soon the result will be evident.

Having known what to focus on, how then do you maintain it? Be Forward Looking! Focus is all about looking forward. Anybody who wants to go forward will have to keep looking forward. Have you ever seen a man who drove kilometers successfully looking backward? No! Progress of any kind is impossible without looking forward. Stop looking backward. Yesterday is gone, it is dead and buried; so allow it to be. Forget about the past and get ready for your future, by making the most of your today (Philippians 3:13-14).

Refuse Distractions! In life, many things call for your attention, but that does not make them necessary for you. Is it not true that on the highway, you cannot afford to look left and right and expect to arrive at your destination without casualties? What about an athlete who is running but looking at the spectators? How far will he go? Remember how Peter began to sink? He was distracted by the storm. That is why if there is anything you must fight, it is distraction.

The beginning of focus is in a personal relationship with Jesus. In case you would want to receive Him right now, please say this prayer: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today.  I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the living God. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.”

If you prayed this simple prayer, congratulations you are born again and you are now a child of God! He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).
