Dear Reader,

I hope you were blessed by the first part of this teaching. I have gotten lots of testimonies on restoration of families and individuals all to the glory of God and you are next in line for a miracle in Jesus’ name. Today, I shall conclude this series on Tame Your Tongue with emphasis on How to Use Your Words and How to Transform the Tongue.

How to Use Your Words

The Bible has a lot to say on how we use our words. Here are a few Biblical principles about the use of words.

  • Refrain from the use of Attack Words

Words can be used as a weapon to lash into people. Do not make it your goal to hurt people by what you say. For some women and men alike, the first thing they do in the morning is brush their teeth and sharpen their tongue; that will not be you in Jesus name.  Words can cut like a knife the Bible describes in Psalm 64:3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words” God does not want you to use your words as a weapon against your family and others rather, He wants you to use your words to bless your family and others as well as wage a war against the devil which is the enemy.

  • Refrain from Gossip

You must be careful about the news you share concerning others. It is often being said, “There is only one thing as difficult as unscrambling an egg, and that is unspreading a rumor.” Gossip is destructive, and it is subtle. Someone begins a conversation: “Did you hear?” Before you know it, you’re caught up in gossip. Don’t believe everything you hear; a gossip usually makes a mountain out of a molehill by adding some dirt. Be careful about listening to gossip. Listening to gossip is no better than telling it. There is a saying, “He who gossips to you will gossip about you.” The Bible cautions in Proverbs 20:19, He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends (Proverbs 16:28). Watch out for gossip least your family be destroyed!

  • Use Edifying Words

The Bible admonished in Eph 4:29, Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. The Bible tells us to use our words to help people, to build others up, not to tear them down. A popular Zig Ziglar saying is, “He climbs highest who helps another up.” Our words can have an incredibly positive effect in our family. Many of you have found great comfort or encouragement because of what someone said to you, just as I always write to encourage you. Don’t underestimate the value of an encouraging word.

  • Use Truthful Words

Jesus said, But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil (Matthew 5:37).  People need to believe what you say. Lying destroys your credibility. It will destroy the trust your family have in you, if you are continuously known for untruthful words. Chances are that anyone in the act of lying will eventually be caught if they make a practice of lying. Be honest. Let the words that flow from your mouth be truthful. Jesus had perfect control over his tongue and the use of his mouth. He always said what He meant and meant what he said, so He always had perfect results.

 Transform The Tongue

Transforming the tongue begins with a change in the heart. Jesus said, But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man (Matthew 15:18).  The heart influences the tongue, when it is full of anger, selfishness, envy, pride, and all the other ugly things that can invade the heart, it will be affected. You can transform your mind through the Word of God and successfully transform your tongue. Jesus admonished in Romans 12 :2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The challenge is not out there, it’s within; something needs to change within you. Your focus needs to be transformed, instead of looking for the bad in a situation, you should look for the good. Instead of being preoccupied with self-interest, you need to focus on the interests of your family. Changing your heart is a good place to start. You need to learn how to think before we speak. The Bible teaches in James 1:19-20, Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. Take a moment before you speak. Here is an acrostic to help evaluate whether you are about to say something you perhaps shouldn’t. Ask the following questions:

T- is it true?

H- Is it helpful?

I-Is it inspiring?

N-Is it necessary?

K- Is it kind?

If what you are about to say does not pass this simple test, then don’t say it. Think before you speak. Tap into God’s help. This help is available to you. Who can tame the human tongue? Jesus can. Jesus is in the business of transforming lives. Paul reminded through the Bible, Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). Jesus can give us the desire and motivation to change. Most of all, He can give us the ability to make the change. Paul commented, I can do all things through Him which strengtheneth me (Philippians 4:13). Countless lives have been transformed through Christ. Jesus specializes as a change agent. Let Jesus do His work in your life.

Perhaps you are thinking, I need to make some changes on the way I use my tongue. But how do I do it? Perhaps you have been trying to make some changes in your speech but it ended in failure. You want to know what you can do to succeed this time; you have to accept Jesus; He alone can help you tame your tongue. You need to be born again. This is done by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. If you are already born again, rejoice because your case is settled. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart:

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).
