Dear Reader,

It is the middle of the month and I am sure you have set your goals rolling already. If you have not, do not worry, there is still plenty of time to do that, but the best time to start is now.

Goal setting gives you a sense of purpose; it helps you channel all your energy towards achieving something that is of uttermost interest to you and is worthwhile.  This is because every successful venture begins with a good and viable plan. Goal setting can be seen as a plan towards what you want to achieve. It is written:

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he (Proverbs 29:18).

Goal setting makes the difference between success and failure. However, to set great goals that are achievable, they must have the following characteristics:

  • It must be built on God’s Plan: Most times, the reason why people do not see their goals achieved is that they do not walk according to God’s will for their life. The Bible says: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11).

You must seek God’s plan for you per time, to be able to set great goals. You cannot walk outside of God’s plan for you and expect to succeed at it. Remember that His plan only bring you good. Therefore, this year, you should begin by seeking His plan for your life.

  • Be specific about it: God does not give us ambiguous plans; therefore our goals cannot be ambiguous. You must be able to define clearly what you want to do and how it can be achieved. For instance, if your goal is to make a particular grade in school or receive a certain award, you must be able to state it.
  • It must be Measurable: This means that you should be able to tell per-time if you are making progress. Goals that are not measurable cannot be accounted for. You should know what to see, feel and hear when that goal is achieved (Habakkuk 2:3). A well measured goal always speaks at the end of it.
  • It must be Attainable: Set goals that are achievable, not goals from your imagination. Although you must learn to dream big, but you must be able and well equipped to arrive at it.
  • It should be realistic: So many people set unrealistic goals; that is why they do not see them achieved. For instance, you cannot say you want to graduate with a first class result when you are in your final year and is presently on a third class. However, it could be realistic if your goal were to make a first class result for that semester. The Bible says: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap (Galatians 6:7).
  • It should be time-bound: Your goal must be structured under a time frame. Like in a year or two, towards the end of the month or quarter etc. It is written: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

However, you must understand that everything achievable in the Kingdom of God begins with new birth.  This means that you must be born again to be able to receive help to set smart goals.

Being born again means confessing Jesus as Lord and Saviour of your life. So, if you have not done this before, or may have strayed from your decision to make Jesus the only Lord over your life, then you must say this prayer in faith:

Dear Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I believe You died and rose again for my sake. Forgive me of my sins, take over my life, make me Your child and let Your peace reign over my life. Thank you for saving me.  Now I know I am born again!

Congratulations, you are now born again! I believe that you will begin to experience the reality of the price that Jesus paid for your sins at Calvary.
