GET HOLD OF YOUR EMOTIONS (1)
One thing I have discovered that has a lot to do with how much we make our lives count is our emotions. For uncontrolled emotions, many have stayed under the bushel instead of on the mountain top! Yet, many others have become stagnated in life, simply because they have not learnt how to control their emotions. That is why, this month, I shall be teaching on a topic titled: Get Hold of Your Emotions
Emotions can be described as strong instinctive feeling and they include feeling such as love, hatred, fear, anxiety, worries, pride, comparison etc. Many people have spoiled relationships for lack of control of emotions. Today, let us look at some examples of the resultant effects of some emotions in the lives of men and women.
Worry always makes you sorry. When you feel sorry for yourself you end up with sorrow and sorrow, of course, leads to a broken heart. You have only one heart, why must you allow sorrow to break it for you? Some women have been married without a child, so you hear them say, “I have been married for the past twenty years, yet no child. I have been born again; doing everything Pastor says I should do. How long will I wait? Everybody else in my family has children except me.” Before long, she begins to feel sorry for herself and her head is cast down. Then she begins to look older than her age. She is just forty, but when she sits with her husband, she looks like his mother. What is making her old? Worry! Please stop worrying!
One other thing that worry does, is to tie you to your past. Maybe as a married woman, your husband refuses to fend for the family. You are the one paying the children’s school fees, feeding the family etc., As a result, you begin to regret and say, “I wish I did not marry this man in the first place.” You are tied to your past; and if you are not careful, you will pass with the past! Rather than tying your present to the past, let go of the past, so you can take hold of the key of today and unlock the great tomorrow that God has in store for you.
Jesus said, “Why do you bother about what to eat and what to drink? Can you add one cubic to your stature by worrying?” (Matthew 6:30 paraphrased). If you cannot, then it is not wise to get worried. From today, I see every worry in your life come to an end!
A single lady is over concerned about her future until every good man passes her by. She is so worried that she is always morose. Even when God tells a man to go near her and the man comes, he says, “This one that never smiles, I don’t think I can handle her!” You need to brighten up and allow the joy of the Lord radiate from you. That way, men will be attracted to you.
Jealousy is another dangerous emotion and many people (particularly women) have been caught in its trap. How does jealousy come?
- It comes when you feel others are getting ahead of you. You see your colleagues moving ahead of you and you feel bad. “We finished school together, now look at her position in her place of work and I am still at the bottom!” Instead of feeling jealous, find out what she is doing that you are not doing right and change your attitude; then, you will also get promoted.
- Jealousy also comes from a feeling of insecurity. Somebody is always outshining you, and you feel threatened. You get afraid that the person will soon be more popular than you. Change your attitude, put your emotions under control, or else you will destroy things.
- Jealousy also comes out of comparison. Who are you comparing yourself with? The Bible says: … But they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise(2 Corinthians 10:12). Don’t you know that you are uniquely made by God? There is a part of God that only you can fulfil. That is why God said in 1Peter 2:9: But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
You are chosen, you are peculiar and the word peculiar means that you are in a class of your own; just standing out! So, don’t keep comparing yourself with others, you will miss your unique identity. You will live all your life as a copy when God made you an original! Stop comparing yourself with others, ask God to reveal you to you and then live as you, set to fulfil destiny standing out and shining where God has placed you.
- Jealousy also comes out of envy. Remember Cain and Abel, God accepted the offering of Abel and rejected that of Cain. Envy set in and they both lost out. You will not lose out! Give no room to envy or else you will end up in the pit.
Anger comes out of a feeling of displeasure. When you are displeased about something, you get angry. It also comes out of indignation, hostility and ultimately degenerates into wrath. There is no one that does not get angry; all it takes is to put anger under control.
Personally, one thing that I have discovered that has helped me a lot in dealing with anger, is not talking when I am angry; because if I talk, I will say things that I may not be able to unsay. You know that words are like eggs, once you break them you cannot pack them back into the shells. So, it takes discipline.
You must know when to say what. Many people have destroyed their homes because of anger? They have a disagreement and before you know it, the woman packs her bags and leaves. She says, “I am going back to my father’s house.” The Bible says: Anger resides in the bosom of fools (Ecclesiastes 7:9 NASU). I see you receive your freedom now in the name of Jesus. To be a partaker of this grace, you must first be a child of God and this is by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.
Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).
