Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)
Mercy is what covers our errors before God.
It qualifies us to access the blessings He has in store for us as His Children and begins the successful life of a believer. Mercy is important because
“… All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23 (KJV)
Without the mercy of God therefore, none of us can stand righteous before God. It is only this mercy that can cleanse us and give us the opportunity to stand before this God blameless. Not because of any of our doings, but only because of His mercy.
“So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.” Romans 9:16 (KJV)
Mercy is unquantifiable in the benefits it provides us but we will look at two. These are:
1. The washing away of our sins (previously mentioned above)
We see that the mercy of God cleans us up and washes us so white that God only sees us as clean. After the washing of our sins with His mercy, He can only see us as clean. Can you see?
It’s His mercy that washes, and His eyes no longer can see those blemishes. The Almighty, all- knowing, all- seeing, all- remembering God can no longer remember our sins?
Wow! This mercy washes our blemishes and we are continuously set free and made whole through it.
“Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy” Genesis 19:19 (KJV)
2. Security and Protection
The mercy of God not only continuously washes our sins and makes us look clean again, it also provokes the anger of God towards our enemies.
First, we’re forgiven, then we’re protected, then our enemies are destroyed for our sake. The mercy of God clearly gives us beyond what it is we deserve! Now that we see how important mercy is to the believer, the question is how do we gain access to this mercy of God?
This blood is the blood of Christ and it is therefore important to plead the blood of Jesus on a daily basis; not only for protection but also for mercy. This involves pleading the blood of Jesus both in prayers and in the physical (through sprinkling on ourselves and our surroundings).
This causes God to see us through the eyes of the blood and nothing touches God like the blood of His son. He therefore will see us without blemish when looking through this scope.
7. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses…
13. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.” Exodus 12: 7, 13 (KJV)
God told the people of Israel to use the blood around the doors of their houses for a reason. He could have asked that they stand outside and He’ll see His children to protect them, but He didn’t. He asked that they use the blood! If any one Egyptian was in the house of an Israelite, He would have also been saved that night and it would have been for nothing but the blood!
Mercy therefore not only wipes clean our blemished pasts but can be used both as a vessel of defense and one of offense. It protects, and also defends.
The need for mercy can therefore not be overemphasized and so it remains important for us to go with the consciousness of mercy on a daily basis. I pray today that the mercy of God will engulf us like never before, and that for those whose pasts affect and maybe even “hunt” them, I pray that the blood of Jesus which speaks better things than the blood of Abel will go to war for you today!
You are completely set free in the name of Jesus
