Dear Reader,

As I begin this second part of this article, I will like to share with you a quote from Abraham Lincoln on character. He says: “Character is like a tree and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it, but the tree is the real thing.” When you exhibit good character, you are the one to benefit from it. You must understand that:

Character is the foundation of your future. No matter how beautiful a building looks from the outside, if it has a faulty foundation, it will soon collapse. This goes for a faulty character as well. The Bible says: If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? (Psalms 11:3) Your future has a lot to do with your character. Your world is awaiting your manifestation; you cannot afford to play away with it due to negligence.

Character is the stabilizer of your destiny. The future of any one that lacks character is neither stable nor secure. Character serves as a balance for your destiny. Just as a stabilizer balances electrical current that passes through an appliance, character will absorb any shock that might want to affect your destiny.

It prevents you from being a hypocrite. Many people live a life of double standards. You can never be too sure of how they will behave; they are unstable as water. This kind of life holds no future for anyone. Remember that: The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3). When you cultivate godly character, you are the same at all times and it brings trust, honour and glory for you.

However, what are the attributes of a godly character?

  • Honesty: This is the state of truthfulness, and truth is power. Nothing empowers people like truth. To build a godly character you must ensure that you speak and stand for the truth at all times (2 Corinthians 8:21). Dishonesty should never be associated with you because it will affect your destiny.
  • Discipline: This is self-control; it is the willingness to take orders. It affects all aspect of your life, from punctuality to attitude and accountability. The truth is: If you cannot control your life, you cannot be in control of life. It is best for you therefore to embrace orderliness and self-control (1 Corinthians 14:40). Be disciplined in time, where you go, the friends you keep, money, food, dressing, conversations, etc. Remember, these areas say a lot about who you are.

Cultivating Character

To build a godly character, you must:

  • Possess a Heart for God: If your heart is constantly beating towards God and the things of His Kingdom, His Word will be your guiding force thereby forming your character (Colossians 3:16).
  • Be Purpose Driven: Until you discover your purpose for living, the reason God has placed you here on this earth, character building may be an odious task. Purpose gives you a sense of direction and focus and that is what forms your strong will to do all it takes to guide your destiny.
  • Get Hooked to the Holy Spirit: Developing godly character is only possible by the help of the Holy Spirit. He strengthens, teaches and empowers you to become who God intends for you to be (Zechariah 4:6b).
  • Let go of Wrong Association: This point cannot be overemphasized; evil communication always corrupt good manners. The company you keep has a lot to do with your character. Do not be friends with people that have questionable characters so they don’t corrupt you (Proverbs 16:17)
  • Be willing to forgive: I have come to realize that the reason many people struggle with character deficiency is traceable to bitterness and unforgiveness. In your journey through life you will be hurt by people, some of which are closest to you. You must be willing to forgive at all times so their deeds will not dent your character, thereby robbing you of your glorious future (Matthew 6:12).

One true way you can put your character in check is to put these words by Frank Outlaw in action. It says: “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”

As you embrace character and continuously cultivate, grow and strengthen it, your life shall be crises free! However, all of these begins by surrendering your life to Jesus Christ; you must first be born again. To accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour of your life, you should say this prayer in faith:

Dear Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I believe You died and rose again for my sake. Forgive me of my sins, take over my life, make me Your child and let Your peace reign over my life. Thank you for saving me.  Now I know I am born again!

Congratulations, you are now born again! I believe that you will begin to experience the reality of the price that Jesus paid for your sins at Calvary.
