Building Blocks Of Life (2)
Peace and blessings in Jesus’ name! In the last edition of this series, I taught on how to possess a good heart and ways in which God’s Word that builds our heart and faith can be stolen. In this edition, I will focus on: Building A Godly Character
For you to lay a sure foundation this new year, you need to possess the right character. Character is the foundation of your future. Just like the future of any physical building is determined by its foundation, when a person has a defect in his or her character; it affects the general outcome of his/her life. What a physical foundation is to a building is what character is to a man’s future. No character, no glorious future in view.
What is Character?
Character is simply a person’s pattern of behaviour. It is essentially a matter of the heart that eventually reflects on the outside. As a man thinks in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7). Your character cannot be hidden. Your character is your true beauty and clothing. Beauty is not in the powder you rub on your face; it is not in the dress you wear or the fashionable shoes you put on. All of these have their place, but the real beauty is your character. The Bible says: Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised (Proverbs 31:30).
As a man or a woman, do you fear the Lord? If you really fear the Lord, it will reflect in your character. The real you cannot be hidden from God; He knows you inside out. The Bible says …The Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed (1 Samuel 2:3).
It is very important for you to know that your character is the stabilizer of your destiny. Stabilizers are used with electrical gadgets to regulate erratic power supply. Many people in life have gone through destiny shocks because their lives lack the required stabilizer (character).
How Then, Do You Develop A Godly Character?
Have a heart for God:
Character is essentially a matter of the heart. God is interested in your heart. If you can have a heart for God, then He will be able to turn your entire life around to exhibit His good works. The Bible says: My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways (Proverbs 23:26). God does not need your money; all He wants from you is your heart. You have to allow God’s Word to dwell richly in your heart. For that to happen, you have to consciously cultivate the good habit of feeding on the Word of God. It is what is inside your heart that will manifest in your character. Just like the computer, when you feed it with garbage, it gives you garbage.
Therefore, to have a sure foundation you must spend quality time with the Word of God, in prayer and in fellowship with Him; then, His Word will begin to dwell in your heart. Hide the Word in your heart, whatever He likes, like it and whatever He hates, you too should hate. Let the fear of God overwhelm you like it did to Joseph in the house of Potiphar, when Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him. He said: …How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? (Genesis 39:9). The Word of God kept him from sin. The Bible says: Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee (Psalm 119:11).
Employ the help of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit has the ability to help you to develop a good character. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, your character cannot be properly moulded. The Bible says: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23). These are the character traits of the Holy Spirit. If you possess all these, you will always do well in your walk with God. The Bible says: For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:8).
If you depend on the Holy Spirit, His character will definitely rub off on you. If you are born again, you have access to the Holy Spirit. All you need to do is ask God for the baptism of the Holy Spirit. In case you are not born again yet, you have to surrender your life to Christ and after that, you can now ask God for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Developing a godly character is not by power or might; it is by His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). So, it is not enough to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues, you must constantly go to Him for help. At any point in time you see that you have missed it in any way, return to God. Let Him know you are sorry, then give the Holy Spirit the opportunity to supply the strength you need so that you will not miss it again. The Holy Spirit is always there to help you but the Bible says: Quench not the Spirit (I Thessalonians 5:19). Don’t grieve Him with sin, iniquity and unrighteousness.
You must understand that without having a godly character, your destiny is insecure. You must also bear in mind that you don’t have eternity to do the right things, you only have a season (Ecclesiastes 3:10). So, maximise this season by ensuring a sure foundation and begin to work on your character now!
Having a godly character begins with having a good relationship with your Creator, in order to reflect the character of God. If you are not born again and you want to do so today, you need to say this prayer in faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.
Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).
