BE A GODLY EXAMPLE (1)
Happy New Month! You are welcome to another wonderful time in God’s presence. Today, we shall be looking at the topic “Be A Godly Example”.
Mothers, our children need not only hear our rules, but should see us living out what we teach them. It is the kind of life you mirror before your children day after day that leaves an indelible mark on their lives. Nothing affects your children like your positive or negative examples. The Bible says: Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Whether you realise it or not, your children’s character and values are built slowly but surely, by what they see, hear and observe from your words, actions, reactions and choices on a daily basis.
Ultimately, your children will turn out just like you! So, watch what kind of life you live before your children no matter how young they are. The best way to teach your children is to live by example. For instance, the best way to teach your children to be God-fearing is to be God-fearing yourself; that will impact them more than any sermon you preach. Whatever virtue you desire to see in your children, work on yourself to possess the same first, and then it will be easy to impart same to them.
I once read a story about four preachers that was very interesting to me. These four preachers were discussing the merits and benefits of the various translations of the Bible. The first one said he liked the King James Version best because of its originality. The second one said he liked the New American Standard Version better, because it is closer to the original translation. The third preacher preferred the New International Version because its vocabulary is up-to-date. After the three of them had spoken, the fourth one kept silent for a while, then stepped forward and said, “I like my mother’s translation best”. The other three were surprised and said, “We didn’t know your mother had translated the Bible”. To this, he replied, “She translated the Bible into real life and it is the most convincing translation I ever saw”. What a testimony! Mothers, how are you translating the Bible to your children? The Bible calls us the salt of the earth and admonishes us to allow our light to shine before men that they may see our good works and glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). Are you showing forth good works?
We can pick vital lessons from the example Rebecca showed her sons in Genesis 25:23-33, and how she masterminded a great deceit against her children. Rebecca was armed with the revelation that her elder son will serve the younger, and with this revelation, she took to Jacob the younger twin immediately. She never discussed the revelation with her husband; she chose to keep it to herself. Instead of praying for divine intervention, the couple shared their affection unequally (Genesis 25:28). As they grew, Isaac took to the older twin son, Esau, who was more of a field man. Jacob on the other hand was always at the mother’s side as a tent man. Soon enough, prophesy began to unfold upon the twin brothers and Rebecca connived with the younger son to deceive her husband. Jacob got the blessing that was culturally meant for Esau as the first son. But was the deceit really necessary? Remember, God had declared that Jacob will rule over Esau, even before they were born. Since Esau already sold his birthright to Jacob (Genesis 25:31-33), did Rebecca have to help God to cause His Word to come to pass? Certainly not! Rebecca made a difference, but not positively; her action caused so much rivalry between her sons that Esau contemplated murdering his brother as soon as their father passed on. Consequently, Rebecca had to arrange for Jacob’s escape. Therefore, mothers be careful what you do today, because the consequences will outlive you. Strive to be a godly example to your children in all you do.
However, your decision to be a godly example begins with Jesus Christ in your life. You need to be born again. This is done by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour. If you are already born again, rejoice because your case is settled. If you are not born again yet and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.
Congratulations! If you prayed that simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21). With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace, in Jesus’ name!
